Cities such as Genoa, Pisa, Pietrasanta are all within an hour’s drive from the agriturismo.
Genoa is the city full of hidden treasures. Genoa (Genova) is a port city and the capital of the Liguria region in northwestern Italy. It is known for its central role in maritime trade for many centuries. In the old town is the Romanesque Cathedral of San Lorenzo, with its black and white striped facade and frescoes on the inside. Narrow streets open onto monumental squares such as Piazza de Ferrari, site of an iconic bronze fountain and the Teatro Carlo Felice opera house. (source google)
Pisa is more than the leaning tower. The Leaning Tower has made Pisa famous all over the world, and besides the tower, the city offers many more interesting things to see that are worth at least a whole day – check out Pisa in one day itinerary – to plan your visit. Also check the Dutch site ”the taste of Italy”.
When you first arrive at the beautiful Square of Miracles (Piazza dei Miracoli), your gaze will be captivated by the magnificent tower. Don’t just admire it from below: climbing the tower is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that we highly encourage you to experience. You will enjoy both the incredible climb and the amazing view from the top (you can buy tickets in advance as the number of entries is limited every half hour)!
After admiring the Leaning Tower of Pisa from all angles (including the classic photo of you pretending to support it to keep as a memento), continue your visit to the other monuments in the Piazza: the Cathedral and the Baptistry. Also located along the perimeter of the square are the cemetery, the cathedral museum and the museum of the synopses. Enjoy a leisurely stroll along the River Arno, passing Clock Palace on the way to enter Piazza dei Cavalieri, once the heart of power in the city and later the headquarters of the Knights of St. Stephen. In the Palazzo della Carovana overlooking the square, the prestigious Scuola Normale of Pisa has its base.
What else is there to do in Pisa? Eat cecina! It is a kind of very thin gluten-free bread made with chickpea flour, water, oil, salt and black pepper. You can eat the cecina on its own or in a schiacciatina, a flat bread. A real treat you must try!
Annual events
Every June, Pisa celebrates the city’s patron saint, San Ranieri, with traditional events that follow one another during the Giugno Pisano. If you are in Pisa at this time of year, we recommend that you spend some time in Pisa and enjoy the Luminara, the Regatta of San Ranieri and the Battle of the Bridge.
